Wyrmwood: Apocalypse (2021) is the perfect sequel, the natural continuation of Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014) featuring more zombies, more blood, more action, more inhuman experiments, the old and new heroes, and new evil bad guys, it all accompanied by a bigger budget and the Roache-Turner Brothers being more experienced filmmakers. With those ingredients, we can almost assure nothing can go wrong. The good surprise is that it went even better than expected!

The movie is an ultra-violent festival, a non-stop rollercoaster of blood-splattering action that never takes the foot off the accelerator. It’s only moments of calm are when we see the daily routine of our new hero, who with the company of the song Red Right Hand by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds carries on with his duties, the everyday wonders of a zombie apocalypse, with shooting some zombies in the heads, working out, using the undead as cattle, and a little bit of gardening. A small touch of sick humor to get everyone ready for the constant battling that is lurking in.

The premise of Wyrmwood: Apocalypse (2021) is pretty simple: Australia is infested with zombies, and there are only a few survivors that remain human. A new Surgeon General is carrying out cruel experiments in the name of searching for a cure for the virus that turns humans into blood-thirsty zombies out of control. And at his service we have Rhys, played again by Luke McKenzie, the twin brother of The Captain in the first movie who found dead at the hands of Brooke and Barry. First working for the bad guys, but soon turned into a hero in a rescue mission, Rhys, Brooke, and Barry will break into the Surgeon’s bunker to stop once and for all the atrocities committed by the heartless soldiers.

I think you can measure the success of the movie, if it is going to stay in the memories of the people, if it’s going to take an important part in the popular knowledge, when there is one happening or one character that becomes iconic. And in the Wyrmwood universe, we have, without a doubt, the character of Brooke, the human-zombie hybrid portrayed by Bianca Bradey. Here, once again, Brooke plays an essential part, making every time she is on the screen gain more and more status of a cult character. And that is something remarkable in a saga where the mad scientists, the bad guys in uniforms, the vehicles, and even the zombies breathing combustible gas have a strong iconic component.

There is not a hint of a doubt that Wyrmwood: Apocalypse (2021) is an enjoyable ride for every fan of horror and action movies. But, if I already consider the first movie Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014) to be an essential film, this sequel has raised significantly the saga to an even higher level which makes me state without hesitation that this could be the best zombies movie of the new century. Even better than another action extravaganza like Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead (2004), the cult classic of comedies and blood splattering that is Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead (2004), or the independent horror gem that Jeremy Gardner’s The Battery (2012) became. Each one of them are great zombie movies, and each one of them have their own personality, but I think about entertainment value and as an epic story leaving a mark on the audience, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse (2021) is above them all.
