First of all, I am a huge Guitar Wolf fan, and I’ve been listening to their music for over a decade. So after reading the description of the movie, “Only legendary Japanese garage rock band Guitar Wolf can stand between a race of aliens from destroying earth with an army of zombies”, I thought this one had to be in this reviews list mandatorily. I put the disk into the DVD player and the menu was also quite epic. Those images, that bad gore, the loud rock n roll playing… This HAD to be the movie. I was ready for something epic.
The movie starts strong and loud, with a live performance of the band Guitar Wolf. You get kicked into the mood of something special instantly, the movie is getting you glued to the chair from the begining.
But not everything that shines in neons is gold, so we get slowly into a poor plot movie. Some yakuza guys, some other random small criminals, and a pretty weak love story. And then we get into a slow classic zombie movie with very bad make up effects and lots of bad acting. For most of the movie, the energy is only kept by the loud music (not only Guitar Wolf songs, but also some other classics from alternative rock and punk from the 90s like Bikini Kill), and some rock n roll attitude in the images that reminds you this is still a special movie. Luckily, towards the end, at the final battle, we can witness some of this epic we were waiting for. Lots of explossions, extremelly bad special effects, and the guys from Guitar Wolf turned into some kind of god-like Earth saviours who save us from that bizarre alien-zombie invasion (that, as far as I know, it came from absolutely nowhere).
Oh, and if the main stars of the movie are the band members themselves, should we say this is based in true story events? I think so, yes.
And remember, like Guitar Wolf himself says, “Love has no borders, nationalities, or genders. So be Rock and Roll!!”. So be it.
