Okay, this one is going to be hard to review. Because I have been a big fan of Glenn Danzig since I can recall my memories. I grew up listening to The Misfits, especially the Danzig era, and I am in the opinion that musically he is living a second youth releasing this decade the best albums he has recorded for almost 40 years. And, although I am not a big fan of comics, I couldn’t help to check out the works released by Verotik, the publishing company owned by Glenn Danzig himself. That’s why since I heard this movie was going to be in production a few years ago I was craving for this moment. I knew I wanted to see Verotika (2019). No, correction, I NEEDED to see Verotika (2019).

Personally, I can’t think of a best scenario than Sitges Film Festival for me to see this movie. Perhaps the best, nicest and coolest horror, science-fiction and fantasy films festival in Europe, an event I also grew up visiting for decades as a fan and now I am blessed to be part of it as press. So 40 years old me was feeling like a little kid when sitting in front of the big screen when Verotika (2019) was about to start. Since its world premiere at Cinepocalypse back in June this year I read about many other people in the same situation as me. Glenn Danzig has a big horde of fans around the globe, and we all were mad craving for his debut feature film. When the first reviews came out, question marks started to pop, in my head and I bet in the rest of the fan’s minds. Verotika (2019) has been called awful and horrible, so bad that is funny. And, major words, an instant classic of crap cinema.

Ok, after watching the movie I must admit I agree with that description. But there is a lot of things I don’t understand. Actually, maybe there are only 2 things I don’t understand: “Why?”, and “What have you done, Glenn?”. Really, there is nothing to salvage in Verotika (2019). The stories are silly, but we already knew that because they also are in the comic books. But… the rest of the aspects of the movie are also horrible, incomprehensible. Danzig found the worst actors one could find. The formula of tits and gore is taken to the most ridiculous level. Filming is plane dull, as if the figure of the director was nonexistent. And we better not mention how stupid the edition work was. Oh, wait, and how can an experienced musician perpetrate such a dreadful soundtrack?

Yes, Verotika (2019) is so extremely bad that one can’t help but laugh. How can Glenn Danzig, a person with an expected wide knowledge of the occult and horror sub-culture dedicate so much time, energy, passion and money to a project like this? I mean, was he making the definitive comedy? I think not, I think he took the movie very serious. Then, what was the need for this thing to exist?

People, go watch Verotika (2019). Really, do it. It’s so funny that it should be scored an 8/10. But it’s soooo bad that it doesn’t deserve more than a 2/10. Without a shadow of a doubt, in the top5 of worst movies I have seen in my life. And sadly I have seen plenty.

Glenn, what have you done?
