Well, we can’t say they didn’t try it. The filmmakers used on Trick (2019) everything they had in their hands. Strong feminine characters, some popular faces like Omar Epps and Tom Atkins, several plot twists, a masked bad guy killing on Halloween day, and even some social criticism. Those are good ingredients, it’s well played. And it is evident the movie is made with love and passion. But, why doesn’t it just work?
The general plot is not something new in this kind of movie, but that never stopped some films like Halloween (1978) or Scream (1996) to become undebatable cult classics. Left for dead, a murderer comes back every Halloween night to kill teenagers in surrounding little American towns. And a detective who has lost his family and job will stop at nothing to put an end to the slaughtering. Nobody believes him when he claims the killer was not dead, but he refuses on believing it is a ghost who is committing the crimes. Who will be right at the end of the game?
Trick (2019) is well acted, well narrated, the story flows well, it doesn’t have ups and downs, but it still feels like something is missing. Director Patrick Lussier has an extense career in movies that have potential but they never end up working, after being responsible for the Dracula 2000 trilogy, The Prophecy 3: The Ascent (2000), White Noise 2: The Light (2007), My Bloody Valentine (2009) and Drive Angry (2011). Still, I think Trick (2019) is his best film to date. Him and his frequent co-writer Todd Farmer, who also has a supporting role in the film, are getting closer to finally making a big hit. But sometimes putting a bunch of cliches together is not enough.
Although I can’t consider Trick (2019) a good movie, it is one of those films that you can keep in your head after the viewing. And I mean in a positive way. I could totally recommend it to the lovers of the slasher genre, there are a few killing moments that are kind to the gore and well-performing. Also, the fans of supernatural and detective movies can find with Trick (2019) a pleasant watch. But I am afraid we all will end up having the same feeling, the movie is entertaining enough but it will never make the list of best titles of the year. Probably better than most movies in the subgenre, but still lacking a final punch.
