Skinford Death Sentence (2023) has all the ingredients of the previous films, Skinford (2017) and Skinford: Chapter Two (2018), but gets a little bit crazier. As it happens in the John Wick saga, whatever the protagonist does gets more and more unplausible. Is that a complaint? Not at all! Bring on the craziness!!
As one would expect if you’d seen the previous two films of the saga, Skinford Death Sentence (2023) is a rollercoaster of action, craziness, some weird humor, and a bunch of sordid images. The filmmakers go all-in in this new installment that ends leaving the entire story open for new installments to come.
Although the story follows the happenings of the previous films and most of the actors are reprising their roles, Skinford Death Sentence (2023) still works as a stand-alone episode. The story is strong and focuses on the events we are seeing on screen, and the narrative is straight-to-the-point in a matter that you won’t deviate attention much from what is going on. And some of the action scenes are a real blast, very well-executed spectacular sequences, so altogether the film can keep you glued to your chair for about an hour and a half.
I personally have a problem with the main protagonist of the saga, that Jimmy Skinford dude played by Joshua Brennan; I don’t like his face and I don’t like his silly way of acting, as if it all was a joke. But, well, he gets some nice beat-ups here so all is fine. And this is a mere personal opinion that shouldn’t influence anyone or my global view of the whole thing, but I had to mention it. The rest of the cast accomplishes their duties effectively, so no big damage is done.
And I don’t want to end this text without praising again the spectacularity and good factory of the action scenes and the make-up effects, a great work done both in the most dirty debased moments and also in the shoot-out moments.
Perhaps the writer and director Nik Kacevski should take into more serious consideration what he has in his hands, because this is a very exciting saga, and this third installment is a big entertaining piece. Perhaps the playful tone of the whole film, especially displayed by the main protagonist and his buddies, is doing a small favor to take Skinford Death Sentence (2023) as a serious action and horror flick with enough craft to stand beside the big-budget Hollywood productions. And perhaps this is exactly what the filmmakers were aiming for, some fun entertainment with no big aspirations. In that second case, the mission was accomplished and with honors.
Without a doubt, a fun watch.
