It is always a great surprise to find a sci-fi movie that makes you think and brings you something new. In a time where everything is already invented, it’s nice to witness some fresh ideas. And luckily, in the last years we have been blessed with a few ones. Are we in a new golden age of science fiction?

This movie Predestination’s set up is very realistic. The special effects, although there are not many, they are perfect for the story. And the acting is convincing (special attention to the quite unknown Sarah Snook, a possible new pearl from Australia). The story is very interesting and catchy, it keeps you in tension and with 5 senses focused on the screen. But then, why this movie is not one of the biggest hits of the decade? That’s something I am not sure. There is something in the movie that doesn’t work 100% right. Technically it doesn’t seem to have any shortage, but something keeps it away from being a masterpiece. It stays only as a very correct and enjoyable science fiction film.

See that I am not saying anything about the plot or the theme of the movie. It took me by surprise, since I never read or see anything previous about it, and it worked very fine for me. This is one of these movies that is better when you walk into it slowly, and when the narration gives you all you need to know at the moment. The rest is up to you and your imagination.

This is the third movie from The Spierig Brothers. Their previous movie, Daybreakers, starred as well by Ethan Hawke, also tried to bring some fresh light into the vampires genre, but didn’t work so well and stayed as a mediocre piece. And with their first movie, Undead, they gave a new twist to the aliens / zombies subgenere. But it neither worked so well. The Spierig Brothers style and plots look like the work of people loving horror and sci-fi, and wanting to bring something fresh, not the same old stories. And that’s something we all, the audience, totally aprove. Now I am really looking forward to see what will be their next approach, and see if they finally make the next perfect movie, one of those instant classics. Probably they will never be Christopher Nolan, but they could end up following his steps.

So if you like science fiction, this can be a movie for you. If you like movies that keep you thinking hours after watching it, this one can also work. And if you just want an hour and half of entertainment, this one can’t decieve you. Not epic, but great pic.
