Mosquito State (2020) is the story of a man who happens to be a mathematics genius but he doesn’t know much about reality in a society. He works as a Wall Street data analyst and considering the apartment where he lives he might be making quite a fortune, but in the opposite of his colleagues at work he doesn’t care about money, benefits, percentages, and luxury, all he cares about of are his algorithms. Those predictive algorithms that help the company make millions of dollars are his babies. And that is necessary to try to understand the reason for his behaving, because when mathematics and logic fail the man’s brain melts down.
Different people can behave in many different ways in a situation like that, but our protagonist decides to reclude himself in his fancy apartment and act as some kind of a father figure for the swarms of mosquitos that are infesting his home. First studying their life cycle and then becoming a food source.
Mosquito State (2020) is a daring proposal, the kind of cinema that will focus more on playing with the senses of the audience than in developing a big elaborated story. Since the opening credits sequence, it is clear that Polish writer and director Filip Jan Rymsza is going to give big importance to the treating of the images and the sound. A group of images that are cold but precious, involved by a constant soundtrack that is simplistic and cocooning.
The narrative is calm, there is never urgency in the film. Like a disease that is brooding in our body system, the story in Mosquito State (2020) just flows at its own pace. The protagonist Beau Knapp is present in almost all the frames, and most of the time he is the only one on the scene. But, yet, he is never alone because the environment, the music, the treatment of the imagines, all those cinematographic elements are always wrapping up the composition.
Don’t expect bloody horror, crazy action, or ferocity, this is not an offspring of the David Cronenberg arts. Mosquito State (2020) is a drama with some elements of fantasy, and it’s subsided and mellow. It never gets deep into the technicities of those mathematical algorithms that are so important for the character, and it has a little love story that makes the protagonist a little more humane. It is a very personal descend into madness, a small story to enjoy as a relaxing time. And it will be available in Shudder on August 26, 2021.
