The title does not lie: in Mayhem (2017) you’ll find lots of violence and chaos from the hands of director Joe Lynch, a heavy metal and B-movies lover, who’s been involved in this kind cinema for a while already. A perfect movie to see at the Sitges Film Festival, it comes loaded with blood and good intentions.
The departure point: a virus that unbinds people’s primary instincts forces a hole office building to be closed in quarantine for hours. And it’s not precisely an enterprise that characterizes itself for a good working environment… so imagine what happens when you’ve been working under stress for a bitchy boss for years, and finally, you’ve got the guts to go and tell him what you think about it all… nice, right?
The movie is lucky to have an endearing cast starring Steven Yeun (our beloved Glenn in The Walking Dead (2010-2016)) and Samara Weaving (Ash vs Evil Dead TV Series (2015-2016)), who must team up to fight against the injustices of the system, represented by the mean bosses also very well played by Steven Brand and Caroline Chikezie. I would say the cast is the strength of this movie: while the story doesn’t get much deeper, and the action gets a bit slow for what we were promised, they manage to keep you entertained on your seat until the end. Some laughs and a good message is quite a deal for an hour and a half of entertainment.
