I assume almost everybody has heard about Looper, that science fiction movie that became an instant classic in 2012. I remember there were a few months when everybody was talking about it, some people loved it, some people hated it, but everybody had something to say. Well, at summer of 2016 I had not seen it yet. So yesterday I decided to fix that and give it a try, so I wouldn’t be an outsider of society anymore and could have my own opinion about it.

I think the idea of Looper is very interesting. A total festival of paradoxes. To follow the movie you have to understand that if you change something now, it will affect the future. And that gives you infinite possibilities to build an interesting story. Although it is basicly a science fiction themed movie, all the plot is taken strongly into the fields of action films. Perhaps to please the big audience that look for simple and adrenalinic stories for fast and easy entertainment, or maybe that was the main idea since the begining, but I have missed some more depth in the film.

Another strong characteristic in Looper is how they got together a trio of main stars that although they might not based their carreers in science ficition films they are remembered by us the public by other time traveling features. Joseph Gordon-Levitt will always be remembered by Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece Inception (2010), the almighty Bruce Willis had one of his surprise carreer twists with Twelve Monkeys (1995) and Emily Blunt got her big hit in blackbuster films with Edge of Tomorrow (2014). So, somehow, it all has sense.

Rian Johnson, the writer and director of Looper, does a good job. But I can’t help to think if he had worked better on the script and improved the direction so it doesn’t look like a clone of all the empty sci-fi action movies we have nowadays, the result would had been much better. Then we wouldn’t have the discussion if Looper is a little master piece or if it is only a hollow entertainment product.

But what can I say, I enjoyed Looper. And it did something I totally love from a movie: it kept me thinking about it for hours. And probably I will still have the movie in my head for a few days. Maybe not so much for what it is, but for what this good idea could had been.
