Knife+Heart (2018), called Un Couteau Dans le Coeur in its original French language, is a curious movie, one of those that one is glad to find in a festival like Sitges Film Festival. Placed in the mid-1970s in Paris, it circles around a group of porn filmmakers, in the subgenre of male gay erotism, that one by one start to get murdered stabbed with a knife by a mysterious character. Swimming between the waters of drama and thriller, the movie is filled up with a huge comedic sense that makes the whole experience even more enjoyable.
Although the film is might at first seem very gay focused, as it features the filming and broadcasting of several pornographic scenes, it’s not a very explicit movie. The goal of the film is not to provoke or to turn on the homosexual audience, but to entertain in a global sense. No matter what your gender or your sexual tendency is, this is a movie to have a good time and share some laughs. The plot is quite unlikely, which makes evident that overall this is conceived as a comedy, plus most of the performances are taken so much to the extreme that one can’t help to have a smile drawn on the face along the whole running time. Facts like the stabbing bbc dildo with a blade already appearing in the very first scene of the movie, the character of Bouche d’Or, or the ridiculous scenes the so-called filmmakers are creating are effective humoristic tricks to ease up the plot of a drama thriller that without those little fun moments and the histrionic performances would make this movie a not so nice one to see.
Something special to mention, and I apologize if this can be taken as some sort of spoiler, is the design of the bad guy of the movie. That tortured teenager left for dead but back as a shadowy serial killer, dressed up in black, stabbing his victims with a knife (or the blade dildo), and wearing the BDSM leather mask covering the face… Come on, dudes, this is the 40th anniversary of John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978), am I permitted to call him Michael Gayers? No offense, honestly. But the reference is clear as water. And in a movie like this, it is welcome.
Un Couteau Dans le Coeur (2018) is a good entertainment piece with no other pretensions than making the audience have a good time. Its main claim could be the presence of French singer and actress star Vanessa Paradis, which by the way delivers a very measured mix of drama and comedy that serves very well to the final purpose of the feature, as the rest of the actors do. But don’t expect a sophisticated or artsy flick here, because the filmmakers chose to strip the movie off all the possible glamour. On the trail of other European nasty horror thriller comedies like Killer Condom (1996).
