And here we have another remake’s review! Yes, I know there’s a lot of people pissed off because of the “remake trend” that’s been invading our screens during the last years but from time to time, an outstanding one pops up and it would be a pity to miss it just because it’s a remake (like the excellent I Spit on your Grave aka Day of the Woman (2010) remake, or even The Hills Have Eyes (2006) amongst others). But, I’m afraid Inside is not one of these.

A pregnant woman (Rachel Nicols) is alone at home when a stranger (Laura Harring) knocks on the door. She hardly can imagine the nightmare it’s about to come. And the viewers neither! Miguel Angel Vivas was the responsible of the remarkable home invasion flick Secuestrados aka Kidnapped (2010) so one could expect something interesting , to say the least. He knows how to shoot, he knows how to edit, he knows how a movie should sound like and he knows how to build atmosphere. He really knows. But you couldn’t tell after seeing Inside.

The acting is not good at all, everything seems to be clearly staged and fake. Rachel Nicols is not new to acting (I really enjoyed her role at Parking 2 (Franck Khalfoun – 2007)) and Laura Harring has appeared even in cult director David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001) and Inland Empire (2006). Let’s better forget about the secondary characters. The music is completely out of place and is quite evident. And the script… It doesn’t make any sense. The original movie had its flaws too , and one of them was its very solid first half and a downhill second one, but at least you could enjoy the movie because of many other strengths (over the top acting, amazing effects, stylish bloody action…) but this time, there are no strengths at all.

I was “lucky” enough to assist to the premiere with the production company and Rachel Nicols presenting the movie, and when they said that this time, they tried to make a thriller and forget about the blood I started to panic. And not because I can’t go through a bloodless thriller: I worried because the blood and the extreme violence was 50% of the original version A l’interieur (Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo – 2007 –read the review here-). And the woman in black was one of the most terrifying females roles ever seen on the big screen!

To sum things up: There’s only one thing worst than a bad movie, and it’s a pretentious as fuck bad movie. Jaume Balagueró ([Rec] (2007) and [Rec]² (2009), Darkness (2002), Mientras duermes aka Sleep Tight (2011)…) is on the writing tasks and even one of the writers and directors of the original version, Alexandre Bustillo is taking care of the scenario, and even then, they haven’t achieved success. Avoid at all costs!
