Cold Prey (or it’s original norwegian tittle Fritt Vilt) is a movie that I’ve been wanting to watch for a while. In part because it became pretty popular when it came out, and also because in the last years we’ve had a few very interesting movies coming from the Scandinavian country, like Dead Snow (2009) or Troll Hunter (2010). But in opposite to these last 2 ones, that really brought entertaining fresh air to the genre (ahem, sorry for the easy joke), I am sorry to say that Fritt Vilt is nothing but a bunch of old cliches with not much of originality.
A group of friends in their early 20s go to a trip to the wild snowed mountains looking for some snowboard adventures when one of them gets seriously injured. The group then have to rush to find shelter, and they do in what looks to be an abandoned vacations resort. They seem to be fine waiting for the help to arrive, but soon they find out they are not alone there. Yes, it’s exactly what you are thinking: we’ve seen that a milion times.
The acting is maybe the only thing to save from this low imagination film. In fact, thanks to the international success of the movie, the main star Ingrid Bolsø Berdal managed to launch her Hollywood carreer and appear in films like Hercules (2014) or Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013). Also it is mandatory to stand out the wonderful landscapes from the norwegian mountains. The movie is visually rich, but besides that it’s pretty empty.
So what we have here is an hour and half of a quite well done slasher film but with no imagination or surprises at all. Some scary scenes that can keep you tensed up, but you won’t find any new ideas. Entertaining but pointless. But at least our favorite norwegian kings Turbonegro shared one of their songs for the closing credits. Maybe my favorite part of the movie, I would say.
As a detail, to mention that this film’s director Roar Uthaug seems to be the chosen one to direct the Tomb Raider reboot expected to arrive in 2017. Well, seeing the lack of ideas of mr. Uthaug and of the original movies from the franchise, I’m afraid we shouldn’t expect anything interesting for the new adventures of Lara Croft.
