After gaining international recognition (and a collection of awards) playing Lisbeth Salander in the original Swedish Millennium films trilogy, and tasting the honey of Hollywood participating in movies like Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), Prometheus (2012), Dead Man Down (2013), The Drop (2014), and Bright (2017), Noomi Rapace has returned these last years to the Scandinavian countries and embarked in risky but interesting projects like Lamb (2021), The Trip (2021), and Black Crab (2022). One of her latest works, You Won’t Be Alone (2022), a horror drama UK, Serbia, and Australia co-production, is coming out this month.
Set in an isolated mountain village in 19th century Macedonia, You Won’t Be Alone (2022) follows a young girl who is kidnapped and then transformed into a witch by an ancient spirit. Curious about life as a human, the young witch accidentally kills a peasant in the nearby village and then takes her victim’s shape to live life in her skin. Her curiosity ignited, and she continues to wield this horrific power in order to understand what it means to be human.
This is the debut feature film of writer and director Goran Stolevski, who gained some international recognition thanks to his awards-winner short film Would You Look at Her (2017).
Together with Noomi Rapace, the cast for You Won’t Be Alone (2022) is formed by Alice Englert, Anamaria Marinca, Sara Klimoska, Félix Maritaud, Carloto Cotta, Arta Dobroshi, and Irena Ristic.
The movie had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2022, and it was also part of the Palm Springs International Film Festival where it won the Directors to Watch award. The Guardian has described the film as “like nothing we’ve really ever seen before… and like nothing we’re likely to see again“.
You Won’t Be Alone (2022) is Rated R for violence and gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, and sexual assault. Distributed by Focus Features, it is coming out in theaters in the USA on April 1, 2022, and later the same month in Australia and other territories. Watch here the trailer for the movie.
