Since its premiere last summer at FrightFest, many people have praised the wicked events occurring in horror and mystery Daughter (2022). The movie has been called a mix between Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth (2009) and Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016).
The movie centers on a young woman who is kidnapped and inducted into a bizarre family as their new surrogate daughter. As she navigates through this twisted dynamic, awful secrets about the past are revealed, leading to even darker implications about the future.
The debutant in a feature film Corey Deshon is the producer, writer, and director of Daughter (2022). His most notable work to date was the screenplay for crime horror Trespassers (2018).
Casper Van Dien, Elyse Dinh, Vivien Ngô, Ian Alexander, Megan Le, and Edward Stasik form the main cast.
Daughter (2022) won the Best Picture and Best Lead Actor (Casper Van Dien) awards at the Orlando Film Festival.
The director stated that “from the wars we fight over our conflicting worldviews, the insane mental gymnastics we conjure in order to justify them, and the insignificance of truth in the absence of freedom comes Daughter (2022). […] Inspired by feminist existentialist philosopher Simone De Beauvoir’s The Ethics of Ambiguity, this film is a meditation on the morality and ethics of freedom and creative expression within an oppressed system. Through this surrealist psychodrama, we seek to explore the questions, ‘Can one truly be free if they do not will the freedom of others?’ and ‘If that freedom must come at a moral cost, who is going to pay?’”.
Dark Star Pictures has the distribution rights for the film and has scheduled it for a limited theatrical and digital release on February 10, 2023.
