Everybody will agree that Sundance Film Festival is one of the most prestigious independent films festivals in the world. But along its history, the horror genre has never been one of their most spoiled ones. Still, for the last 2 years, one of the most notorious movies of the festival ends up becoming the most interesting horror title of the year. In 2016 it happened with The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (or simply called The Witch) (2015) the movie that got all the eyes on, and even won the Best Directing Award for its director Robert Eggers. And the next year, it was Get Out (2017) the movie people couldn’t stop talking about. And see how it is going, nominated for a bunch of Oscars and collecting all kinds of winnings and nominations everywhere it goes.
If we have to pay attention to this “Sundance thermometer”, all the eyes this year should point at Hereditary (2018). Undoubtfully, one of the sensations of the festival. Since its premiere this past January, it’s been in the mouth of the lucky witnesses who could attend to its screenings. This movie is written and directed by debutant Ari Aster. It “unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell”. –Taken from its official press note–
Hereditary (2018) starts when Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away. Her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. And, of course, it all ends pretty bad when the supernatural and pure horror takes over the place and their lives.
The movie is starred by Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd and Mallory Bechtel, a nice mix of two veteran renowned actors with some young upcoming stars. We will have to wait for a little to see if Hereditary (2018) delivers as much as the good reviews are making us expect since the official opening day in the USA is the 8th of June. But meanwhile, we have here the first trailer for the movie. It already got me:
