Almost every month we learn that James Wan has embarked on a new project. While he is currently in the process of filming as director the sequel for her Marvel hit Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2022) and the upcoming Netflix horror and science-fiction TV series Archive 81, recently we have learned that he will produce the movie adaptation for the 1980s cult TV series Knight Rider, and will also be involved in the remake for the Stephen King novel adaptation Salem’s Lot that Gary Dauberman, the director of Annabelle Comes Home (2019), has written and will direct.
And, somehow, he still had time to produce, co-write and direct a new horror movie, a title that is called to be one of the hit horror films of the fall, mystery horror Malignant (2021).
The movie centers on Madison, a young woman who is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders. And her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
The movie is based on a story written by James Wan and his partner Ingrid Bisu, who also has a supporting role in the film. Akela Cooper, the writer of Hell Fest (2018) and M3GAN, another upcoming James Wan production, has been in charge of the screenplay.
Annabelle Wallis, who is known for her participation in movies like Annabelle (2014) and its sequel Annabelle: Creation (2017), The Mummy (2017), adventure films Sword of Vengeance (2015), and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017), and the popular gangster TV series Peaky Blinders (2013–), is playing the lead Madison. Together with her, Maddie Hasson, Michole Briana White, George Young, Jacqueline McKenzie, Paula Marshall, Jake Abel, Patrick Cox, and Rachel Winfree complete the main cast.
Malignant (2021), produced by New Line Cinema and James Wan’s Atomic Monster Productions, is Rated R for strong horror, violence, and gruesome images, and language. Warner Bros. Pictures will release the movie in theaters and HBO Max on September 10, 2021. Watch here the second and final official trailer.
