Described as an uncomfortable watch, but in the most entertaining sense of the meaning, Waking Nightmare (2023) is an upcoming horror thriller that brings together some faces from iconic movies from the 1980s in a disturbing film close to the torture-porn style.
The movie centers on Jordan, who suffered manic episodes after the loss of her friend. Her mother has a family doctor prescribe her Ambien to help with her sleepwalking. As time goes on, Jordan has issues remembering what happened.
Diane Franklin (The Last American Virgin (1982), Amityville II: The Possession (1982), TerrorVision (1986), Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)), David Naughton (An American Werewolf in London (1981), Body Bags (1993)), and Jamison Newlander (The Lost Boys (1987), The Blob (1988)) are the main stars in a cast that also includes Shelley Regner, Yan Birch, Brian Tyler Cohen, Stephen Wu, Kelly Leon Guerrero, and Ryan Bonnick.
Steve Craig and Brian Farmer are the duo director in Waking Nightmare (2023). Brian Farmer (Blue Call (2021)) is also the writer of the screenplay.
Steve Craig has stated that “we wanted to create a unique experience for horror fans by blending horror comedy and drama with the toxic uncertainty of films like [Takachi] Miike’s Audition (1999). What drew me to the project was Brian [Farmer]’s concept of an unwitting killer who is just an average girl struggling to find normalcy in a mad world”.
The co-director Brian Farmer continues “Bending the forms of reality is something that has always intrigued me. I was honored to work with my brother in cinema Stephen Craig on Waking Nightmare (2023). Creating the world that the characters lived in, sane and insane in something that bends the visual scape of the genre. People are affected by sleepwalking. The unknown of where you’ll wake up is truly a Waking Nightmare (2023)”.
Terror Films is distributing the movie and has scheduled it for a digital release on August 18, 2023.
