If last year Train to Busan (2016) was the Korean movie who made the audiences everywhere in the world go crazy with a fantastic and frantic bloodfest, everything points that The Villainess (2017) will do such thing this year. Written and directed by Byung-gil Jung, who a few years ago hit us all with his debut fiction film Confession of Murder (2012), we are now talking about a movie which plot might be already quite used specially in Asian cinema, but its spectacular action sequences and choreographies, and its deliciously treated images, have made the movie being called some sort of Korean Kill Bill (2003, 2004).
“Sook-hee is a trained assassin who was born to kill. She was just a little girl when the training started in Yanbian, China. After the death of her mentor, when the chance of starting a new life was given to her, she came to South Korea as a government agent. They promised her that she will be free after ten years of service. So she begins her new life as a theatre actress. But soon two men Joong-sang and Hyun-soo appear in her new life. And she started to find deep dark secrets about her past. Eventually, she takes matters into her own hands”, reads the official plot.
Last Sunday, The Villainess (2017) had its UK premiere at Frightfest, after having been screened at Cannes Film Festival and Fantasia Festival. And in October, the movie will also enjoy of its run at the Sitges Film Festival, where surely will become one of the main attractions. Do you think that is exaggerated? Well, check it out by yourself:
