A new Luc Besson film is always an interesting happening. Far are the times when he shocked the world with his fantastic science fiction and thriller approaches with titles like The Fifth Element (1997) or Léon: The Professional (1994), but recent titles like The Family (2013) and Lucy (2014) prove the French filmmaker is still in good shape. His newest film, which is coming to theaters this summer, is Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017).
The film is written and directed by Luc Besson, based on a comic book series by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières. It takes us to the 28th century, where Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha-an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.
The attractive cast formed by names like Cara Delevingne, Dane DeHaan, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke and Rutger Hauer is another big feature for this science fiction quest epic. The movie is rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and action, suggestive material and brief language, more family friendly than most of the fans could have expected. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) premiers at the Canadian Fantasia International Film Festival this 19th of July, and will then come out to theaters between the end of July and August everywhere in the world.
