The Snowman is a novel by Norwegian crime-writer Jo Nesbø published in 2007. It is the seventh entry in his Harry Hole series. The main plot is set in 2004, when Norwegian detective, Harry Hole investigates a number of recent murders of women around Oslo. His experience of an earlier training course with the FBI leads him to search for links between the cases, and he finds two: each victim is a married mother and after each murder a snowman appears at the murder scene. On looking back through previous cold cases, Hole comes to realize that he is in the case of Norway’s first official serial killer, as he discovers more women who have disappeared and are believed to have been abducted or murdered in a similar way. Almost all of the victims vanished after the first snowfall of winter and a snowman is found near the scene, this fact having been ignored by the original investigators.
The movie version of the book is currently in post-production. It is directed by Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, better known for being the author of the original film Let the Right One In (2008). This marks his second feature film in English language, after the international success of his previous title Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011). The Snowman (2017) is opening in some European countries the 13th of October and in the USA and the rest of Europe the 20th of October.
Besides the attractive story and solvent director, another incentive to mark this movie in your wanna-watch list is the A-class cast of actors. Names like Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Chloë Sevigny, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J. K. Simmons, Val Kilmer, Sofia Helin, James D’Arcy, Toby Jones, Jamie Clayton, Anne Reid or Jakob Oftebro take part of this mystery thriller. Martin Scorsese (who has the role of executive producer of the film) was originally attached to direct the movie. Even Ridley Scott was considered as a possible director before it ended in the hands of Tomas Alfredson.
