Miss Bala (2011) was a USA and Mexico production that achieved some impact early this decade and had a successful run at festivals like Ariel Awards in Mexico, Cannes Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Spain Goya Awards, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Philadelphia Film Festival, Satellite Awards and winning the Horizons Award – Special Mention at San Sebastián International Film Festival. The movie, co-written and directed by Gerardo Naranjo, is a crime thriller depicting how after entering a beauty contest in Tijuana, a young woman witnesses drug-related murders and is forced to do the gang’s bidding.

It didn’t take a long time for Sony Pictures to decide to make their own remake of the movie, which is opening early next year. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has written the screenplay and Catherine Hardwicke, responsible of hit titles like Thirteen (2003), Twilight (2008) or Red Riding Hood (2011), has been in charge of the direction. Miss Bala (2019) has been rated PG-13 for sequences of gun violence, sexual and drug content, thematic material, and language.

Gina Rodriguez, better known for her role in Annihilation (2018), and Anthony Mackie, a habitual in thrillers like Triple 9 (2016), The Fifth Estate (2013), The Adjustment Bureau (2011), Eagle Eye (2008) and The Manchurian Candidate (2004), and Falcon in the Marvel movie universe, star in Miss Bala (2019). Matt Lauria, Aislinn Derbez, Will Blagrove, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Cristina Rodlo and Ricardo Abarca complete the main cast.

The 25th of January 2019 Miss Bala (2019) comes out in the USA and some European territories. The 8th of February the movie will come out in the UK. You can check out the official trailer here:
