Ánimas (2018) is the second feature film written and directed by the tandem formed by filmmakers Laura Alvea and Jose F. Ortuño, based on the novel of the same name written by Ortuño. It tells the story of Alex, a girl with a strong personality, who is very close to her best friend Abraham, a shy, insecure boy as a consequence of his complex relationship with his parents. Everything changes when Abraham’s father dies in a bizarre accident. From this moment on, Alex will be thrust into a mind-bending trip where the line between reality and nightmares will start to start to blur.
5 years have passed since their last movie of the pair of directors, the multi-awarded fantasy drama The Extraordinary Tale (2013), or The Extraordinary Tale of the Times Table as it was originally called. Like its predecessor, Ánimas (2018) was filmed in Sevilla, Spain. This new horror thriller is starred by Ángela Molina, a veteran actress better known for appearing in many of Pedro Almodóvar’s works, Luis Bermejo, Chacha Huang, Clare Durant, Iván Pellicer and Liz Lobato.
Ánimas (2018) will have its worldwide premiere the 4th of October at Sitges Film Festival and will have a theatrical release in Spain the following day. Filmax has the all media worldwide distribution rights for the movie, so it is yet to see if other countries will also have theatrical releases or if it will go straight to domestic video and streaming services. To see the official trailer in original Spanish language and English subtitles you can check the movie’s online sheet from the Sitges Film Festival site here: www.sitgesfilmfestival.com.
