In the style of science-fiction and fantasy adventures for the whole family that brought Netflix hit TV series Stranger Things (2016–) to the status of a cult, the movie The Adam Project (2022) is conceived to captivate the younger and older members of the household. A science-fiction plot full of fantasy and a mild conception to make it suitable for all the ages, the movie tells the story of a time-traveling pilot who teams up with his younger self and his late father to come to terms with his past while saving the future.

Adam Reed, age 13, and still grieving the sudden death of his father a year earlier, walks into his garage one night to find a wounded pilot hiding there. This mysterious pilot turns out to be the older version of himself from the future, where time travel is in its infancy. He has risked everything to come back in time on a secret mission. Together they must embark on an adventure into the past to find their father, set things right, and save the world. The three working together, both young and grown Adam come to terms with the loss of their father and have a chance to heal the wounds that have shaped them. Adding to the challenge of the mission, the two Adams discover they really don’t like each other very much, and if they’re going to save the world, they’re first going to have to figure out how to get along.

This is the new movie of Shawn Levy, a filmmaker with a wide experience in the genre who has been responsible for a few episodes of Stranger Things (2016–) and Real Steel (2011), as well as comedies like Night at the Museum (2006), its sequel Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009), and Date Night (2010). He has also been the producer of The Watch (2012) and of Denis Villeneuve’s hit sci-fi epic Arrival (2016). The screenplay for The Adam Project (2022) has been written by T.S. Nowlin, one of the writers of The Maze Runner film saga, and Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), Jennifer Flackett, 2 times nominated for the Primetime Emmy Awards for her work in Big Mouth (2017), and Jonathan Tropper.

The main cast in The Adam Project (2022) is led by a group of well-known faces including Ryan Reynolds (Buried (2010)), Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac (2007)), Jennifer Garner (Elektra (2005)), Catherine Keener (Get Out (2017)), and Zoe Saldana (the Guardians of the Galaxy saga). Lucie Guest, Walker Scobell, Mellanie Hubert, Braxton Bjerken, and Esther Ming Li complete the main cast.

Initially, Paramount Pictures became interested in acquiring the film, and Tom Cruise was attached to star, but that plan fell off. The Adam Project (2022) has been produced by the director’s Shawn Levy banner 21 Laps Entertainment together with Skydance Media and Ryan ReynoldsMaximum Effort. The distribution rights belong to Netflix which has scheduled the movie for a release on March 11, 2022.
