Produced by Netflix, a TV series adaptation for George R. R. Martin novella Nightflyers is in development. Initially, it will be a season consisting of 7 episodes. This is not the first time the short story of the popular author gets adapted. In the 1980s, shortly after the story release in 1980, a totally forgettable movie adaptation appeared in the form of Nightflyers (1987).
As everybody might know at this point, George R. R. Martin is most popular for the TV adaptation of his series of books in Game of Thrones (2011– ). Probably nobody living in society this past decade can be unaware of this. But he also achieved some recognition for his writing contribution to other successful TV shows Beauty and the Beast (1987–1990) and The Twilight Zone (1985–1989).
This science fiction-horror story was originally written in 1980 and was first published by Analog Science Fiction and Fact. An expanded version was later published by Dell Publishing. Nightflyers is set in the same fictional “Thousand Worlds” universe as several of Martin‘s other works, including Dying of the Light, Sandkings, A Song for Lya, The Way of Cross and Dragon and the stories collected in Tuf Voyaging. In it, a crew of space explorers embarks on a mission to find a mysterious alien ship after receiving a set of weird signals from deep space. But the plan breaks down when the ship’s computer starts to get homicidal.
The cast is formed by Gretchen Mol, Phillip Rhys, Miranda Raison, Gwynne McElveen, Youssef Kerkour, Andrea Dolente, Abdul Alshareef, Eoin Macken, David Ajala, Sam Strike, Maya Eshet, Angus Sampson and Jodie Turner-Smith.
This fall, the first season of Nightflyers (2018–) will be available on the streaming platforms Syfy in the USA and Netflix in the rest of the world. Here you can see the first official teaser trailer:
