It is a quite unusual thing that a horror movie is selected to entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. But this year Norwegian Thelma (2017) has achieved that purpose. It is a supernatural horror thriller film where a Norwegian student, Thelma, moves to Oslo where she falls in love during her first year in college. She soon discovers that she has inexplicable powers.
The movie is directed by Joachim Trier, who also has written it together with his frequent collaborator Eskil Vogt; a tandem more specialized in drama films other than more fantastic and horror subjects. But seems like this time they nailed it! They nailed it big time!
Thelma (2017) stars Eili Harboe, Okay Kaya, Ellen Dorrit Petersen and Henrik Rafaelsen. The movie has been already screened at several festivals such as Toronto International Film Festival or the Norwegian International Film Festival, where it won the Norwegian Film Critics Award with the quoting “the winner is an original and gripping genre movie that is very conscious of its film-historical roots. As a contribution to the traditions of its genre, it excels in its deep resonance and distinctly Scandinavian motifs and symbolism“. Several other festivals as New York Film Festival, San Diego International Film Festival, Adelaide Film Festival or London Film Festival will screen the movie before the final race to the Oscars.
Indeed, Thelma (2017) will become one of the most relevant titles of the genre whether it wins that famous Oscar or not. Check out the trailer for the film here, because it really looks nice and interesting:
