The "Unfriended" sequel premiered at SXSW

The unexpected success of Unfriended (2014), with a very modest budget of around 1 million dollars and grossing over 32 million only in the USA and twice that figure worldwide made Blumhouse Productions, responsible to finance the title, shoot a sequel secretly to exploit the surprise factor. At first, the cast and director were a secret being provisionally named merely Unfriended 2, as long as its official release name. Now, the surprise culminates after the movie, entitled Unfriended: Dark Web (2018), was screened by surprise at South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) last weekend.

Writer Stephen Susco, author of the screenplays of The Grudge (2004), The Grudge 2 (2006) and Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013), debuts behind the cameras with the Unfriended sequel. In this movie, a teen comes into possession of a new laptop and soon discovers that the previous owner is not only watching him, but will also do anything to get it back.

This new dark and creepy tale about the dangers of the internet is starred by Betty Gabriel, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Stephanie Nogueras, Colin Woodell, Andrew Lees, Douglas Tait and Savira Windyani, a completely different casting regarding the first film.

The screening of Unfriended: Dark Web (2018) at SXSW Festival was quite a success, achieving a good bunch of positive reviews. No official trailer or theatrical release dates are known yet.
