The COVID-19 pandemic might have been changing many things in the world we were used to. Not only new sanitarian restrictions and a global sense of awareness are part of our regular day basis, but it has also affected in a very strong way, and we’ll see if permanently, in the way the big film studios are releasing their projects.
A good example of that is the science-fiction and action movie The Tomorrow War (2021), a film that was planned to be released theatrically as one of the Christmas hits back in December 2020 but it got shelved due to the pandemic. Then it was rescheduled to July 23, 2021, but that also fell and got pulled off again. Until Amazon Studios was stepped in and achieved the distribution rights of the movie for around $200 million. The Tomorrow War (2021) is now coming out on Amazon Prime Video this weekend once the theatrical release is scratched out.
Focusing on the film, The Tomorrow War (2021) is set in a world that is stunned when a group of time travelers arrives from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: Thirty years in the future mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is a high school teacher and family man Dan Forester. Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist and his estranged father in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.
Chris McKay debuts as the director of a live-action film after winning the Primetime Emmy Award for the animation series Robot Chicken (2005) and also being behind fan favorites like The Lego Movie (2014) and The Lego Batman Movie (2017). Zach Dean, writer of the action thrillers 24 Hours to Live (2017) and Deadfall (2012), is the author of the screenplay.
The Tomorrow War (2021) is starred by Chris Pratt, better known for his role Peter Quill / Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies saga. Together with him, Yvonne Strahovski, Edwin Hodge, Sam Richardson, Betty Gilpin, Jasmine Mathews, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Keith Powers, Mike Mitchell, Seychelle Gabriel, and J.K. Simmons also star.
The movie is Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, language, and some suggestive references. Amazon Prime Video has scheduled the release for July 2, 2021. Here you can watch the official final trailer for The Tomorrow War (2021).
