The mystery drama Giving Birth to a Butterfly (2021) premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival on August 9, 2021, where it achieved good praise from the press and audience. Now, Cinedigm has acquired its distribution rights and will release the movie in selected theaters and on digital in May.
The movie is some sort of an excentric and surreal fantasy story about a suburban mom and her son’s pregnant girlfriend who after her identity is stolen begin to bond and transform during a surreal, visually immersive road-trip journey to track down the perpetrators. Dynamically shot on 16mm film, this endearing and hauntingly strange cult classic in the making is also an empowering meditation on family, identity, and the underbelly of American life.
This is the debut feature film of the producer, co-writer, and director Theodore Schaefer. Patrick Lawler is also the co-writer of the screenplay.
Annie Parisse, Gus Birney, Rachel Resheff, Jessica Pimentel, Judith Roberts, Cesar J. Rosado, Clifton Samuels, and Paul Sparks form the main cast.
The director of the film Theodore Schaefer stated that “I’m honored that Giving Birth to a Butterfly (2021) will be added to the stellar slate of films Cinedigm and Fandor have been curating”. […] “It’s clear they have an incisive, discerning eye into the American independent landscape and I can’t think of a better home for our film”.
Giving Birth to a Butterfly (2021) will be released on Fandor, the indie Cinedigm discovering streaming platform, on May 16, 2023.
“Tapping into a nervous dream logic that still resembles the mad world we exist in, Giving Birth to a Butterfly (2021) is one of the most cine-literate American debuts I’ve seen in a while”, said Aaron Hillis, Director of Programming for Cinedigm. “Ted Schaefer is clearly a movie nut who understands both the mechanics and pleasures of genre storytelling”.
Giving Birth to a Butterfly (2021) is first opening in selected theaters from May 1st, 2023, in the USA, with the director of the film attending the screenings. Watch the official trailer for the movie here.
