Before we get over-excited thinking we have in sight one of those hit hybrids between social drama and crazy mysterious horror, we must say this movie stays stronger in the social and cultural aspects of the extreme terrifying situations those immigrants have to go through when they take the risky decision of leaving their land for a promise of a better life than a collection of frights and bloodbaths. This is not a twisted psychological thriller, but the events depicted are still horrible enough and can get touchy.

Nanny (2022) follows the story of the immigrant children take-carer Aisha, who piecing together a new life in New York City while caring for the child of an Upper East Side family, is forced to confront a concealed truth that threatens to shatter her precarious American Dream.

Senegal-born actress Anna Diop, who got the Rising Star Award at the Chicago International Film Festival for her performance in this movie, is the protagonist of the story. She might be better known for her participation in Jordan Peele’s Us (2019). Alongside her, Michelle Monaghan, Sinqua Walls, Morgan Spector, Rose Decker, Leslie Uggams, Rose Decker, Leslie Uggams, and Olamide Candide-Johnson also star.

This is the debut feature film for Sierra Leone-born producer, writer, and director Nikyatu Jusu after a few awards-winner short films. Nanny (2022) had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival where it became the first horror film in the history of the festival to win the Grand Jury Prize, and its director was the first black female to claim the award.

After its Sundance premiere, Nanny (2022) has collected a bunch of nominations and awards in a long list of film festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, Nashville Film Festival, Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Sitges Film Festival, Bergen International Film Festival, AFI Fest, Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Belfast Film Festival, Stockholm International Film Festival, and Hawai’i International Film Festival.

The movie had a limited theatrical release in several English-speaking countries and now it is scheduled for a digital release on platforms including Amazon Prime Video on December 16, 2022.

Nanny (2022) is Rated R for some language and brief sexuality/nudity. Watch its official trailer here.
