The disputes and strikes that have affected Hollywood since May 2, 2023, are starting to affect the release dates of several of the most anticipated releases for upcoming blockbusters. The movements incited by the Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA –the American actor’s union–, that are being supported by entertainment organizations all over the world, claim basically against the threat that supposes the use of AI in the creative processes and the abuse and omission of the intellectual and image rights.
One of the titles that have already been affected by the disputes is Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two (2024), distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which has postponed its worldwide theatrical release to the previous date of November 3, 2023, to March 15, 2024.
The movie is the follow-up of the hit Dune: Part One (2021), which topped the U.S. box office on its opening weekend. The adaptation of the popular Frank Herbert novel Dune, described as a “Star Wars for adults”, explores the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.
The cast of the film is filled with big Hollywood stars including Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica Atreides, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan Corrino, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban Harkonnen, Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, Stephen McKinley Henderson as Thufir Hawat, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam, and Javier Bardem as Stilgar.
The filming for Dune: Part Two (2024) wrapped on December 12, 2022, and it was in the state of post-production.
Other notorious film projects that are being affected by the strikes, either pushing their release dates or being momentarily canceled, are the Avatar sequels, Beetlejuice 2, The Conjuring: Last Rites, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, Twisters, and the untitled new Transformers film.
