Jennifer Kent debuted as a writer and director with the creepy horror film The Babadook (2014), a movie about a widowed mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, who battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house, all with terrific consequences. The movie became one of the most notorious horror films of the year and achieved a long collection of awards and nominations. Now she is back with her latest work, The Nightingale (2018).
Set in 1825, The Nightingale (2018) centers a young Irish convict woman chases a British officer through the rugged Tasmanian wilderness, bent on revenge for a terrible act of violence he committed against her family. On the way she enlists the services of an Aboriginal tracker named Billy, who is also marked by trauma from his own violence-filled past. Aisling Franciosi, Baykali Ganambarr, Sam Claflin, Damon Herriman, Ewen Leslie, Charlie Shotwell, Harry Greenwood and Luke Carroll among others star in the film.
The Nightingale (2018) had its world premiere last September at the Venice Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Lion as Best Film, and Baykali Ganambarr won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor and Jennifer Kent won the Special Jury Prize for the movie. With this background, it is easy to understand why it is one of the most expected titles at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival that will take place next January. And after that, let’s expect the theatrical release dates are announced.
