"The Meg 2: The Trench": Jason Statham is facing a monstrous shark again (first trailer)
Jason Statham in The Meg (2018)

Although is almost everything already said in the subgenre of monstrous creatures, The Meg (2018) became a refreshing surprise for the fans. The story didn’t have anything new, top pioneering experimenting that went wrong, a traumatized hero that saves the day, and a huge monstrous shark menacing to eat everything that gets in its way. Jason Statham was the protagonist of the movie directed Jon Turteltaub, a familiar filmmaker in the adventures genre having been behind titles like National Treasure (2004), National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007), and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010).

The Meg (2018) was a success and the fans loved it, so it is not a big surprise that a sequel was going to be in development. And, for our pleasure, The Meg 2: The Trench (2023) is coming out this summer.

This time, it is Ben Wheatley who has been in the director’s seat. And it is a winning bet due to his experience in thrilling and exciting movies having been responsible for Down Terrace (2009), Kill List (2011), Sightseers (2012), Free Fire (2016), High-Rise (2015), and In the Earth (2021). Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber, the team who wrote The Meg (2018) return with the screenplay of the sequel.

In The Meg 2: The Trench (2023), alongside Jason Statham, the Chinese action star Jing Wu, the protagonist of Wolf Warrior (2015), and The Wandering Earth (2019), lead a daring research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. Pitted against colossal Megs and relentless environmental plunderers, our heroes must outrun, outsmart, and outswim their merciless predators in a pulse-pounding race against time.

Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy also return to the roles they played in the first movie in a cast that also includes Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, Melissanthi Mahut, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Whoopie Van Raam.

Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing The Meg 2: The Trench (2023) which will come out in theaters on August 4, 2023. The official trailer has been released this week. Watch it here.
