At this point, it is hard to say if Zack Snyder’s DC cinematographic universe has more followers or detractors. After being behind the blockbusters Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017), and the revamped director’s cut Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), the filmmaker has moved to other projects and the upcoming one is the science-fiction action epic Rebel Moon (2023).
Originally called Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire, and planned as the first installment of a series of films with the sequel Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver already in post-production and expected next year, Rebel Moon (2023) is set on a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force.
But Kora, a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors – outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.
Sofia Boutella, the former dancer turned film star who has participated in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), Star Trek Beyond (2016), Atomic Blonde (2017), Hotel Artemis (2018), Climax (2018), and Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021), plays the lead role. With her, Cleopatra Coleman (Infinity Pool (2023)), Charlie Hunnam (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)), Cary Elwes (Saw (2004)), Jena Malone (The Neon Demon (2016)), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man (2015)), Ed Skrein (The Transporter Refueled (2015)), Djimon Hounsou (Push (2009)), Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones (2011–2019)), Stuart Martin (Dampyr (2022)), Bae Doona (Cloud Atlas (2012)), and the voice of Anthony Hopkins also star.
This is the second time Zack Snyder has made a Netflix project. First conceived by Snyder as a Star Wars spin-off movie taking place away from the established Skywalker storyline, an idea that got shelved and discarded once Lucasfilm was sold to Disney, Netflix gave Snyder the green light to make Rebel Moon (2023) after the success of Army of the Dead (2021).
Shay Hatten, who already collaborated with Zack Snyder on the screenplay for Army of the Dead (2021) and is also responsible for the scripts of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), Army of Thieves (2021), Day Shift (2022), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), and Kurt Johnstad, the writing and producing partner of Snyder in 300 (2006) and 300: Rise of an Empire (2014), are the co-writers of Rebel Moon (2023).
After the success of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), Netflix will also release Rebel Moon (2023) in theaters and IMAX one month prior to the opening on the streaming platform on December 22, 2023. The first trailer for the movie has been recently shared and you can watch it here.
