The conflict between thinking machines and humankind is something that has been present in fiction works for a long time. One can consider Frankenstein as a human creation with free will, although perhaps not a machine per se, rebelling against its creators. The dystopian science-fiction film Metropolis (1927) could be the best example of machines against their makers in the movies, a subject that has been present in several essential titles like 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Blade Runner (1982), The Terminator (1984), The Matrix (1999), or A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001). Now, the most recent technological achievements are bringing the subject back to the debate in real life, but the idea of the dangers of a self-aware machine, or what will the computers do if they decide they are better off with us humans gone has always been out there for over a century.
And this is the center of the story of the new upcoming movie from Gareth Edwards, a filmmaker that has had science-fiction and epic battles of humans against the biggest threats very present in his career.
The Creator (2023) is a dystopian science-fiction and action movie set in a post-apocalyptic world, in a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill The Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war—and mankind itself.
Gareth Edwards, known for being responsible for Monsters (2010), Godzilla (2014), and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), is producing, directing, and is the co-writer of the movie. Chris Weitz, who already worked with Edwards in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and has also been behind The Golden Compass (2007) and About a Boy (2002), is the co-writer of The Creator (2023).
John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Allison Janney, Ralph Ineson, Mackenzie Lansing, and Marc Menchaca form the main cast.
