South African writer and director Neill Blomkamp, one of the most promising filmmakers of his generation thanks to his amazing debut feature film District 9 (2009) and his not so amazing but still worth-watching Elysium (2013) and Chappie (2015), is back this summer with a new project. The film was shot secretly in mid-2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, in British Columbia, Canada, and is entitled Demonic (2021).
The first trailer for this upcoming horror movie is already out, and I must say it is truly scary and exciting! Demonic (2021) centers on a young woman who unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed.
The main cast is formed by Carly Pope, Nathalie Boltt, Chris William Martin, Michael J Rogers, and Andrea Agur. This marks the first Neill Blomkamp not to feature Sharlto Copley, who was the star in all his movies to date, including most of his short films.
Demonic (2021) premiered at the Berlinale in March 2021. IFC Midnight bought rights to the film in the United States, where it will be released in theaters on August 20, 2021, and on video on demand a week later on August 27, 2021. Here you can watch its first official trailer.
