The Suicide Squad (2021), one of the most awaited movies in this confusing and strange year, has its first official red band trailer out. And, if you were wondering what has James Gunn done with the movie, here you get a very tasty sample for it. So, buckle up because if you are one of the followers of the James Gunn filmmaking style you are not going to get disappointed.

The plot for the follow up for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), serving as some sort of sequel and reboot hybrid, centers on a group of imprisoned convicts of Belle Reve penitentiary who are sent as members of Task Force X to the South American island of Corto Maltese to destroy Jotunheim, a Nazi-era prison, and laboratory which held political prisoners and conducted experiments. Like some sort of The Expendables (2010), but with super-freaks.

After watching the trailer one can see that James Gunn has had total freedom to imprint in the images his very personal style, as he claimed in the social networks. The attractive treatment of editing and pace, the catchy soundtracks, that fast humor, half childish half mature that was some of the essentials in his Guardians of the Galaxy films. And, never forgetting the spectacular action scenes that populate blockbuster movies of this sort. It is only a trailer, but it smells like James Gunn managed to keep the friendly, wicked, and funny essence of his independent films Slither (2006) and, overall, Super (2010), with the epics demanding in a superheroes film, as he already mastered in his Marvel adventure.

James Gunn is the writer and director of the movie, based on the characters created by John Ostrander. Opposite to Ayer’s version, this new film respects most of the uniform colors and tone of the comic book. In the words of the director, “I wanted to stick with John Ostrander‘s original vision of mostly second-rate antagonists. There’s an innate tragic element to supervillains who aren’t even that good at being bad“. Ostrander plays Dr. Fitzgibbon in the film.

The Suicide Squad (2021) is starred by Margot Robbie for the 3rd time in the skin of Harley Quinn after Suicide Squad (2016) and Birds of Prey (2020), Idris Elba as Bloodsport, a role James Gunn wrote specifically for him even though he never met the actor in person before, Michael Rooker as Savant, and David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man. Also, Joel Kinnaman,Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis reprise their roles from the first movie. Together with them, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Mikaela Hoover, Nathan Fillion, John Cena, Sean Gunn, Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Juan Diego Botto, Tinashe Kajese, Julio Ruiz, and Jennifer Holland complete the main cast with the participation of Sylvester Stallone voicing King Shark.

The Suicide Squad (2021) is scheduled to be released theatrically by Warner Bros. Pictures on August 6, 2021, and digitally on the streaming service HBO Max for one month starting on that same date. The first trailer for the movie came out this past weekend. And why is it the red band trailer? Well, maybe because King Shark likes to eat peaople, some times swallowing the poor dude, some other times tearing them into pieces. Yeah, take a look and you’ll see.
