The Earth is toxic and a space station must take an important decision in SciFi "Rubikon"

Rubikon (2022) is an Austrian science-fiction production shot in the English language that opens some interesting philosophical questions. Because following a catastrophe on Earth, the planet is covered in a toxic fog. The crew in a space station must decide whether to risk their lives to get home and search for survivors or stay safe in the station’s “algae symbiosis system”.

The movie is set in 2056. Company soldier Hannah and scientists Gavin and Dimitri are on board of RUBIKON space station researching an algae project aimed to provide humanity with a permanent supply of oxygen and food. But all of a sudden the Earth beneath them disappears in a brown, toxic fog and all contacts are broken – are they the last survivors? Should they leave the safe station and risk their lives by flying back? What is worth living for, what is worth dying for?

This is the debut feature film of co-writer and director Magdalena Lauritsch, who got several awards for Best Film with her short film Rote Flecken (2013). Jessica Lind and Elisabeth Schmied as the story consultant have also been responsible for the screenplay.

The international cast is formed by Julia Franz Richter, George Blagden, Mark Ivanir, Nicholas Monu, Daniela Kong, Konstantin Frolov, Hannah Rang, Ljubisa Gruicic, Jonas Gerzabek, and Mohammed Albaaj.

Rubikon (2022) has been already released on international digital platforms by IFC Films and now it’s finally going to have its theatrical release on September 15, 2022.
