The Body Horror king is back. Check out the first trailer for David Cronenberg's "Crimes of the Future"

It was kept in secret but now that the release date is getting closer we start to learn more and more new things about probably the most exciting cinematographic surprise of the year: David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future (2022). The king of Body-Horror, the creator of the New Flesh concept, is back to the genre that opened the gates of glory to a subgenre he mastered with a big collection of amazing movies including essential classics like Shivers (1975), Rabid (1977), The Brood (1979), Scanners (1981), Videodrome (1983), The Fly (1986), Dead Ringers (1988), Naked Lunch (1991), eXistenZ (1999), and many other audiovisual nightmares. At the turn of the century, he developed a series of films still very personal but far from the horror styles like the commendable A History of Violence (2005) or Eastern Promises (2007). He showed a taste for going back to his origins with the simple but effective short film The Nest (2013) and now, finally, the waiting is over because this year we’ll see the release of Crimes of the Future (2022).

As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner, Caprice, Saul Tenser, a celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin, an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

David Cronenberg has written and directed the movie. Allegedly, the script is largely adapted from an earlier project Cronenberg had written, called Painkillers, which was in development in 2002 with Nicolas Cage attached.

Crimes of the Future (2022) marks the fifth collaboration between David Cronenberg and his star Viggo Mortensen after A History of Violence (2005), Eastern Promises (2007), and A Dangerous Method (2011), while Mortensen directed Cronenberg in Falling (2020). Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart complete the main cast. Scott Speedman, Tanaya Beatty, Denise Capezza, Lihi Kornowski, Don McKellar, and Nadia Litz are also starring.

Crimes of the Future (2022) is Rated R for strong disturbing violent content and grisly images, graphic nudity, and some language. The movie will hate its world premiere this month at the Cannes Film Festival, where it will be competing for the Palme d’Or. Later in June, it will have its international theatrical release.
