Yes, you read this right. And the image accompanying this news piece is taken from the official site https://killertomatoes.com, so it is the real thing!
Even before big studios made popular this kind of movies with titles like Airplane! (1980), Top Secret! (1984) and The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988) and their sequels, a small irreverent independent…. let’s call it “movie” entitled Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978) became an instant cult item. The mix of classic 1950s monster and disaster horror films with the craziest comedy was something in theory hard to see put together, but it worked. Oh, you can bet your ass it worked! Other Killer Tomatoes movies came after this first one, Return of the Killer Tomatoes! (1988) with a newby George Clooney, Killer Tomatoes Strike Back! (1991) and the fourth entry of the trilogy (don’t blame me, the joke is from the movie itself) Killer Tomatoes Eat France! (1992). All of the extremely funny, ridiculous and made with an equal love for monster movies and dumb jokes.
This year 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the first Killer Tomatoes film. So if Michael Myers and Laurie Strode can come back also 40 years after the first Halloween (1978), why not the murderous vegetables? The classic movies were all co-written and directed by John De Bello and were often starred by Stephen “Rock” Peace, Rick Rockwell, Steve Lundquist and John Astin. Are they going to be part of the remake? Well, I absolutely hope so! I don’t think there should be a Killer Tomato movie without De Bello being part of the production.
In the first movie, a group of scientists band together to save the world from mutated Killer Tomatoes. In the second movie and on we see this mysterious mutation was caused by Professor Gangreen’s obsession with world domination. I want to see James Bond against Professor Gangreen someday, I think that would be the most ambitious crossover event in history.
The selection of participants for the audition for the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes remake will be done by October 31, 2018. The audition location will be in San Diego, California, so if you live there or you have in mind paying a visit, perhaps you should check the movie site. And if you want to watch the original movies, last time I checked they all were for free on YouTube. And I leave here the trailer for the original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978). I know it looks old and lo-fi, but that movie is worth!
