During its festival run, the genre mashup of science-fiction, horror, thriller, drama, and social issues The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (2023) got mostly positive reviews and achieved some awards and nominations. Now, it is having a limited release this weekend and also hits streaming platforms.

The movie centers on the world of seventeen-year-old genius Vicaria, which is rife with violence, police brutality, and drug abuse. After losing her mother and later her brother to violence, Vicaria vows to stop the violence bringing her family back to life. She successfully resurrects her brother, but it soon becomes apparent that she has brought back a monster that is hungry for vengeance.

This is the debut feature film of the producer, writer, and director Bomani J. Story, already considered a promising filmmaker despite his short experience, and who is giving a new twist to the classic novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

Laya DeLeon Hayes, Chad L. Coleman, Denzel Whitaker, Reilly Brooke Stith, Keith Holliday, Amani Summer Boyles, and Edem Atsu-Swanzy form the main cast in The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (2023).

After its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival, where it was nominated for the SXSW Adam Yauch Hörnblowér Award, the movie has also been part of the Phoenix Film Festival, Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, Florida Film Festival, Milwaukee Film Festival, and Atlanta Film Festival. Right after its premiere, RLJE Films bought the distribution rights for the movie and is releasing it on June 9, 2023, on digital platforms and selected theaters.
