It’s been nearly a decade since extraterrestrial forces occupied the Earth by force, so a new model of society has been formed. Some sectors of the population have adapted to the new situation and are satisfied with how things are, claiming unemployment to be the lowest in history, a strong cultures union never seen before, and the claim that poverty has been eradicated. But other citizens don’t agree with the situation, blaming it to be a dictatorship, and have formed underground armies to fight against the statutes of power that they blame to hide the real intentions behind the smoke curtain of welfare. Well, the same social conflicts that can be found in any modern democracy, but in a science-fiction enclosure and taken to the extremity of street fight. A post-colonization civil war. This is the start point of movie Captive State (2019).
Director Rupert Wyatt, responsible of the thrillers The Escapist (2008) and The Gambler (2014), who also was behind the cameras in the acclaimed Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), wrote this script together with his wife Erica Beeney, writer of The Battle of Shaker Heights (2003). The movie has been under production since 2016 and was supposed to see the light this past summer, but several problems made the release to be pushed back to March 29, 2019, the date it is scheduled to be released in the USA. All these production problems and delays made director Rupert Wyatt be forced to abandon Gambit (2020) to finish this more personal project.
All of that despite being a story that is always in vogue due to the convulsive political situation the whole planet is living for several years already, and that doesn’t seem to have to change to better anytime soon. And also with the fact that Captive State (2019) has an attractive set of stars. Vera Farmiga and John Goodman lead the cast that includes Machine Gun Kelly, Madeline Brewer, Alan Ruck, Ashton Sanders, Kevin J. O’Connor, James Ransone, Ben Daniels, D.B. Sweeney and Ta’Rhonda Jones.
