Ivanna (2022) is an Indonesian horror movie based on the best-selling novel titled “Meruntih Berang Ivanna Van Dijk” by Risa Saraswati. It centers on Ambar and her family who were terrorized when they celebrated Lebaran in the Bandung area. Ambar, a beautiful young woman who has limited vision, is able to see things that other people can’t see.
In the movie, Since the death of their father and mother, Ambar and Dika move to a nursing home owned by their parents’ best friend and their son, Agus. There are three people in the nursing home of Masa Toea: Grandma Ani, Grandpa Farid, and Oma Ida. The three are taken care of by Rina, a nurse who is also Agus’s girlfriend. Not long after Ambar and Dika’s move, Oma Ida’s grandson, Arthur, comes to celebrate Eid. Ambar, who has the ability to see mystical things, accidentally gets a vision from the past: Ivanna, a Dutch woman, was tortured by Japanese soldiers which resulted in her losing her head. A series of mystical events begin to haunt Ambar and all the residents of the nursing home, especially after they find a headless statue in the basement along with a vinyl record containing a scary song. On the day of Eid, things got even more tense when the residents of the orphanage found that Granny Ani has died without a head. Everyone is panicky, especially when one by one the mystery of Ivanna’s revenge is revealed. With the safety of all the residents of the orphanage now in danger, Ambar is required to finish Ivanna’s revenge, before the spirit takes their lives.
This is the new movie by Kimo Stamboel, who gained big popularity in the Indonesian horror and action movies scene together with Timo Tjahjanto as the directors duo The Mo Brothers, responsible for the already horror classic Macabre (2009) and the action-packed Killers (2014) and Headshot (2016). He has also been a solo director in the horror titles DreadOut (2019) and The Queen of Black Magic (2019).
The screenplay for Ivanna (2022) has been written by Lele Laila, also known for having penned Danur (2017), Danur 2: Maddah (2018), and Danur 3: Sunyaruri (2019) from the same cinematographic universe.
Caitlin Halderman, Jovarel Callum, Junior Roberts, Shandy William, Sonia Alyssa, Taskya Namya, Yayu A.W. Unru, Rina Hassim, Yatie Surachman, and Tanta Ginting form the main cast for the movie.
Ivanna (2022) has already been released in some Asian countries where it has achieved mainly positive reactions. Now we gotta wait to see if the movie can be available in some international film festivals or if some streaming platform wants to make a bet for it.
