The supernatural horror thriller movie Summoning the Spirit (2023) sees a couple encountering an urban legend, the Bigfoot, in their new home in the woods.
The movie follows Carla and Dean as they decide to escape the hustle of the big city, purchasing a home in the remote forest. They have big plans for their new quiet life, only to find something much more sinister. The couple quickly realizes that they are on the land of a cult, and the leader claims a telepathic connection to a legendary flesh-eating beast deep in the woods surrounding them. Carla and Dean are forced to uncover the terrifying truth of the cult’s prophecy.
This is the new work of the awards-winner producer, writer, and director Jon Garcia is perhaps better known for his drama and romance films Strictly for the Birds (2021), Love in Dangerous Times (2020), Luz (2020), Sex Weather (2018), The Falls: Covenant of Grace (2016), The Falls (2012), and Tandem Hearts (2012), but he is not a foreigner in the horror genre having been behind The Hours Till Daylight (2015). Zach Carter, who has already worked with the director as a producer and writer of The Hours Till Daylight (2015), is the co-writer of the screenplay.
The main cast in Summoning the Spirit (2023) is formed by Krystal Millie Valdes, Ernesto Reyes, Jesse Tayeh, Isabelle Muthiah, Robin Magdhalen, Jasmine Sinclair, Lacy Todd, Alan Burrell, and Sean Sisson as the Bigfoot.
The movie premiered at the Miami Film Festival on March 6, 2023, where it collected mostly positive reviews. Gregg Hale, the producer of the iconic The Blair Witch Project (1999), its follow-up Blair Witch (2016), and the Bigfoot movie Exists (2014), praised Summoning the Spirit (2023) saying it ”is a great addition to the sub-sub-genre of Bigfoot horror. The film turns convention on its head with a fresh take on Sasquatch while still delivering on the fun and the scares“.
The movie is out on digital and DVD by Dark Star Pictures on August 8, 2023.
