Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is one of the most important names when it comes to action thrillers or crime dramas, as it can be deducted by some of his most memorable works Out of Sight (1998), Traffic (2000), Erin Brockovich (2000), Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and its sequels, Haywire (2011) or his debut film Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989). But it’s been until his most recent film Unsane (2018) that he is not stepping in the fields of horror.
Perhaps what outstands more about this movie is the fact that Soderbergh decided to shoot the entire footage of the film with an iPhone. But let’s hope this stays as a mere anecdote and we are in front of a good intense psychological horror-thriller.
Unsane (2018) tells the story of a young woman who is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where she is confronted by her greatest fear. But soon things happen and it is unclear if it is all real or it is a product of her delusion. The movie was shot secretly in 2017 and stars Claire Foy, who is currently in the skins of Lisbeth Salander filming the next Millennium film The Girl in the Spider’s Web (2018).
Together with Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins and Amy Irving also star. Unsane (2018) is written by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer and is distributed in the international market by 20th Century Fox. Next month the movie will premiere worldwide at the Berlin International Film Festival – Berlinale. After that, it will have a theatrical release worldwide at the end of March this year.
