The tagline “everybody wears a mask” can sound like a joke now, still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. But, in a metaphorical way, we actually do. Always with a fake smile on our face, trying to fit in an artificial social environment that lost sense a long time ago. And many transcendental questions can pop now, so let’s better leave them aside and focus on entertainment for a little. Because, at least on the screen, some supernatural events, although horrifying and deadly, can keep us away from the dull reality we are living.
Horror South African movie Heks (2020) is filled up with those mysteries that can’t be solved with common sense and reality. It centers on Dilanne, a grieving British girl who unravels her murdered mother’s secrets connected to a South African witch doctor’s curse.
Heks (2020) is the debut feature film of actress Reine Swart, better known for her appearances in the horror movie The Lullaby (2017) and Syfy TV series Dominion (2014–2015) and Z Nation (2014–2018). Coco Lloyd, Mari Molefe van Heerden, Mary-Anne Barlow, Christopher Jaftha, Hungani Ndlovu, Rowan-Raine Pretorius, Stephanie Sandows, Andre Velts, Juanita de Villiers, and Christel van den Bergh form the main cast.
Cleopatra Entertainment has the international distribution rights for Heks (2020), and scheduled the release of the movie for December 14, 2020. The reception was mainly positive, praising the good ambient and feeling of the scariness of the film despite its small budget. Here you can watch its official trailer.
