Slash, Kill, Cut, and... "That's a Wrap". The meta-cinema goes bloody in this horror thriller

Mason Maestro has just directed what he considers to be his masterpiece, a film titled “That’s a Wrap”. Funnily, this is also the title of this horror slasher, an exercise of meta-cinema with gory implications.

In That’s a Wrap (2023), the cast arrives at the studio excited to celebrate what they just created. But they aren’t the only ones there. Someone has dressed up as Mistress, the slasher in the film, and has decided to make the art real by staging their own highly stylized kill scenes. One by one, the cast disappears until the true nature of the evening is revealed.

The movie contains several familiar faces in the horror genre like Robert Donavan, who has played supporting roles in productions from the 1980s and 1990s and is present more recently in Nightmare Man (2006), She Alien (2009), Killer Kate! (2018), Attack of the Unknown (2020), or Night of the Tommyknockers (2022), Cerina Vincent, one of the protagonists in Fear Runs Silent (2000), Cabin Fever (2002), Murder-Set-Pieces (2004), Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007), and Tales of Halloween (2015), the former erotic model Monique Parent who has appreared in Axeman 2: Overkill (2017), The Last House (2015), Jurassic City (2015), and The Perfect House (2013), Gigi Gustin (Girls Just Wanna Have Blood (2019), Asteroid-a-Geddon (2020), The Retaliators (2021), Dawn (2022)), and Sarah French, also known as Scarlet Salem (Killer Biker Chicks (2009), Terror Overload (2009), Shriek of the Sasquatch! (2011), Zombie Pirates (2014), Insectula! (2015), Beach Massacre at Kill Devil Hills (2016), The Night Watchmen (2017), Fatal Premonitions (2017), Ouija House (2018), The Amityville Murders (2018), Rootwood (2018), Blind (2019), Pretty Boy (2021), Brides of Satan (2020), and Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar (2022)). Adam Bucci, Ben Kaplan, Robert L. Lucas, Eve Marlowe, Brandon Patricio, Sarah Polednak, and Dave Sheridan complete the main cast.

The director of That’s a Wrap (2023) is Marcel Walz, a prolific filmmaker in the horror genre having been behind the titles Road Rip (2007), Kadaver (2007), Klischee (2009), La petite mort (2009), Schlaraffenhaus (2011), Raw: The Curse of Grete Müller (2013), Raw 2: Das Tagebuch der Grete Müller (2014), Raw 3: The Revelation of Grete Müller (2015), La Petite Mort II (2014), Blood Feast (2016), Rootwood (2018), Blind (2019), and Pretty Boy (2021). His frequent collaborator Joe Knetter has been the writer together with Robert L. Lucas, the executive producer.

That’s a Wrap (2023) has been part of the Popcorn Frights Film Festival and FrightFest London.

The director Marcel Walz shared about the movie “I’m so excited to have a colorful Giallo slasher as the first movie from our own production company, Neon Noir. Everyone involved in this project brought so much love and talent to the table and made the whole process from start to finish something special. I know the audience will see the love in the end product. My favorite film of all time is Wes Craven’s Scream (1996). That’s a Wrap (2023) is a fun meta-slasher that showcases my love for that series of films combined with my love of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story (2011–). As a gay director, I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to have LGBTQ characters represented in the film. One even plays a key part in a scene that will no doubt get people talking about how that kill is something they’ve never seen before. It’s so ridiculous. I love it”.

That’s a Wrap (2023) is coming out on digital platforms on August 25, 2023, distributed by Quiver Distribution. Watch its official trailer here.
