Like every year in October, world wide horror and fantasy aficionados have an unskippable date with the Sitges Film Festival. And this year is a very special one since it marks the 50th anniversary of the festival. Like every year, the festival will take place in the town of Sitges, in an idyllic spot in the coast of Catalunya, in Spain.
Along the years, influential filmmakers have been guested and awarded in the festival. Some of them are already regulars whether or not are presenting their most recent works. People like Takashi Miike, Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth, Johnnie To, Jaume Balagueró, Paco Plaza, Santiago Segura, David Cronenberg, Paul Verhoeven, the late George A. Romero, Sam Raimi, Jeff Goldblum, David Lynch, Dario Argento, Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Luc Besson, Alexandre Aja or James Woods have been some of the most notorious awarded. Excellent genre movies like Re-Animator (1985), Blue Velvet (1986), Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986), Citizen X (1995), Gattaca (1997), Cube (1997), Ringu (1998), Vidocq (2001), Zatōichi (2003), Oldboy (2003), Hard Candy (2005), The Invitation (2015) and Swiss Army Man (2016), just to name a few, have been blessed with winning the best feature award.
Celebrating the 25 years since the release of Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula (1992), the figure of the Transylvanian county will be the main theme of this year’s festival. Another special event, happening every year, is the already notorious Zombie Walk, happening the first Saturday of the festival, which this year is the 7th of October. It’s also been announced today that actress Susan Sarandon will be visiting Sitges 2017 to receive the Grand Honorary Award.
