Despite her young age, London-born Emerald Fennell has built herself a very successful career in television and as novels author. Perhaps most popular for playing Camilla Shand in popular TV series The Crown (2016– ), and Primetime Emmy Awards nominations for the writing of action drama series Killing Eve (2018– ), she has also been the writer of children’s fantasy novels Shiverton Hall and its sequel The Creeper, both part of the so-called Shiverton Hall series, which followed her first adult horror novel Monsters released in 2015. But that is not enough for her, because 2020 will welcome her debut film as a screenwriter and director, entitled Promising Young Woman (2020).
The movie tells the story of a young woman, traumatized by a tragic event in her past, who seeks out vengeance against men who cross her path. In it, Cassie has been constantly called a promising young woman, until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past.
Promising Young Woman (2020) is starred by Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Laverne Cox, Clancy Brown, Jennifer Coolidge, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Molly Shannon, Angela Zhou, Sam Richardson and Steve Monroe, with supporting roles played by Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Connie Britton, Max Greenfield and Alfred Molina.
As it happened with Emerald Fennell’s debut short film Careful How You Go (2018), Promising Young Woman (2020) will have its world debut in Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2020. It is also expected to have a theatrical release in April 2020. The first trailer for the movie is already out, and you can watch it here:
