Slash/Back (2022) is a horror and science-fiction adventures film that pays homage to the classics of the genre Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and The Thing (1982), in a similar craft as did other modern titles like Attack the Block (2011), Grabbers (2012), and Rim of the World (2019).
The movie is set on Baffin Island, in the Canadian Nunavut territory. It centers on Maika and her ragtag friends, who discover an alien invasion in their tiny arctic hamlet, and it’s up to them to save the day. Utilizing their makeshift weapons and horror movie knowledge, the aliens realize you don’t mess with girls from Pang.
This is the debut feature film of Nyla Innuksuk, also the co-writer and producer with her own label Mixtape VR. Ryan Cavan, a short film awards-winner, is the co-writer of the screenplay.
The main cast is formed by mostly debutants Tasiana Shirley, Nalajoss Ellsworth, Alexis Vincent-Wolfe, Chelsea Prusky, and Frankie Vincent.
Slash/Back (2022) had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 13, 2022, where it was nominated for the SXSW Grand Jury Award for Narrative Feature. It was also part of the TIFF Next Wave Film Festival and Reykjavik International Film Festival. After a limited theatrical release in Canada, the movie is now set to be part of the Shudder catalog on November 18, 2022.
