Although it premiered in 2010, for many genre aficionados A Serbian Film (2010) still remains as one of the most controversial movies of the century. It narrates the fall into the deeps of hell of a retired porn star who agrees to participate in some kind of experimental art film where no plot or details are explained to him, only a big amount of money from the weird producer is on the table. That could represent his clean break from the business, but when he discovers he has been drafted into making a pedophilia and necrophilia themed snuff film, it is too late. The movie gained a lot of popularity when the media made a fear campaign telling how in various screenings people walked out of the theaters terrorized by the explicit images, or some others even felt sick, vomited and passed out from the extreme violence of what they were witnessing. Still, it managed to achieve a few positive reviews and even some nominations and awards in various festivals.
The father of the creature, writer, director and producer Srdjan Spasojevic, has made public this past week that he has over sixty hours of unseen footage and he is working on a new director’s cut of the film. Also, that it will include around 5 minutes never seen before. Why now? Well, regarding all the expectations for further works, Spasojevic hasn’t done any other film besides the segment “R Is for Removed” in The ABCs of Death (2012). Hopefully, the profits for this A Serbian Film (2010) special edition are used on producing a new disgusting epic. We the fans still trust in the director’s potential for bringing the worst side of humankind into the screen.
After all, A Serbian Film (2010) is a not so spectacular thriller that holds all its power in the constant attempts to create controversy and the sickness of its great creepy cinematography. Also, a dark soundtrack and some above acceptable performances by the actors help the title to become an instant cult classic. Watch here the official USA red band trailer here.
